History

Experience an exciting Amalfi stay in a period dwelling with boutique hotel-style amenities

History and emotion. The two essential components of your holidays at Residenza del Duca, where ancient history and modern culture cohabit.

The origins

The ancient building now home to our bed & breakfast was, as early as in 954, part of a hospitium domo rum - that is an architectural complex belonging to an aristocratic lineage.

Visible evidence

The first two floors of the building retain unmistakable medieval traces, ascribable to the 13th century, while the upper floors, boasting Renaissance features, are the location of La Residenza del Duca.

All spaces are skilfully restored: 1600s rooms retaining chestnut beamed ceilings, and 1700s rooms with typical “cloister” and “a schifo” (cloister vault intersected by a parallel plane) ceilings.

A view on local history

The rooms, some of which with balcony, overlook Amalfi's only surviving medieval square: for this reason older generations still call it “Piazz de’ Ferrar“, the ancient “Platea Fabrorum”. It is now erroneously called Piazza dei Dogi, in honour of the Dukes that ruled the Maritime Republic between 957 and 1131.

If you are looking for a travel experience, this small facility, with boutique hotel features, is ideal for an insight into the essence of the Amalfi Coast.
